In 1878, at the age of 12, Ferruccio Busoni composed his first concerto for piano and strings, and already 5 years earlier had he made his first public appearance as a pianist.
This year's symposium, which is part of the 4th edition of the Busoni Piano Festival, is dedicated to the child prodigy and offers a unique chance to witness the world premieres of two of the composer's operas, as well as an entire concert playing tribute to the work of Busoni with the participation of distinguished artists such as Marc Andrè Hamelin. A previously unpublished collection of letters will also be presented. The theme of the child prodigy will be carried through the entire schedule. In this light, a special significance is given to the presence of a present day child prodigy: Kit Armstrong, Alfred Brendel's only scholar who, at the age of 15, was declared a genius on the piano. Armstrong's faculties in the fields of science and mathematics are also remarkable and have gained him a number of awards from Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to that, he is also a composer in his own right. Alfred Brendel, who is planning his retirement after a long career, will be giving one of his last public appearances in Bolzano. For the first time the festival has invited the illustrious pianist Grigory Sokolov, the most eminent representative of the Russian School. Traditionally, the 24 finalists that have been pre-selected for the 57th edition of the Busoni Piano Competition, will participate in an exciting piano marathon in anticipation of the 2009 finals. Two artists, whose careers have been intimately linked with the Busoni competition, will close the festival: Lilya Zilberstern and Alexander Kobrin, the 1987 and 1999 winners. The Haydn Orchestra, directed by Arthur Fagen, will accompany the two soloists in their recitals of Prokofiev's concerto No. 3 and the rarely performed concerto No. 2 by Tchaikovsky.
